So almost immediately after I posted my recent ink portrait of Art the Clown, I got a bug up my backside (pun fully intended) and thought it'd be pretty cool to render a brand-new Spider-Man piece. I wondered how I'd go about the design and I instantly remembered a Spidey piece done by the late Tim Sale. In the piece, Tim featured Spidey swinging in front of the Eiffel Tower but what spoke to me was the color palette used.

Simple red and black. It was striking. No musculature detail. No shading. No gradients. Pure and simple.

So I figured that'd be the creative route I'd take! Plus, I was inspired by my artistic influences, cats like John Romita Sr., John Buscema, Nick Bradshaw, Bob Oksner, Chris Samnee, Evan "Doc" Shaner and Mike Wieringo. When it comes to my comics-inspired art, I'd like to think those classic influences show!

I broke out my trusty "Blue Special" (my Alvin Drafting DA Delux leadholder) and committed to my layout (in my Daler & Rowney 8.5" X 11" sketchbook) based on a photo reference /pose Tracy took of me. (Creating one's own photo references is always an excellent resource, especially with our mobile devices.) After I was satisfied with the layout, I went straight to the inking process, spotting, then hammering in the blacks with my Micron 03 pen, Faber-Castell PITT B-series brush pen and Pentel Pocket Brush Pen.

Once my black ink stage was completed (I opted for total blacks instead of Spidey's typical blue motif), I filled in the areas slated for red with a regular old red ultra-fine Sharpie. I then added a graphic design element behind Spidey, complete with random pattern webbing, to make the foreground pop!

And there you have it, Howlers! I hope you enjoyed this little Spider-Man doodle!

Oh, most importantly, thank YOU so much for visiting and reading!
