Drawing Blanks!

I know; it's kind of a weird one, isn't it? I still think it's pretty cool! Back in 2003, I was taking college design classes and although I thought I knew everything there was to know about art, I still walked into the first class like I didn't know thing one. I found out that I wasn't anywhere near the artist I should have been when the class was challenged to complete a project inspired by Gestalt psychology. My subject was an attractive, young, blonde woman I found in a magazine ad (Can't remember which one. Don't really care) and my mission was to recreate her in nothing but dots of various sizes. And YOU, the viewer, actually unconsciously fill in the blanks! See, the Gestalt Effect (per Dictionary.com) is "a configuration, pattern or organized field having specific properties that cannot be derived from the summation of its component parts; a unified whole." Basically, we mentally fill in the blanks because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I wanted to share this for a couple of reasons: 1) It's pretty nifty (Seriously, look at it up close, then step a a few feet away, then check it out! Now, closer. Now, a few feet away. Look, you're doing the cha-cha!) and 2) it's a little hint of an upcoming project. That's all I can give you other than it'll also be the part of the focus of another video...the method, that is, not the "Dot Girl."

Oh, most important is to remind one and all that you might think you know it all but it's delightfully surprising to learn something you don't.
